چکیده

Introduction Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) occurs greater than 48 hours following endotracheal intubation and is a clinical diagnosis with no gold standard diagnostic criterion. The Clinical Pulmonary Infection Score (CPIS) is a tool used to aid diagnosis and comprises a clinical score of 0-12 based on 6 variables: body temperature, leukocyte count, volume and character of tracheal secretions, arterial oxygenation, chest radiograph findings and results of culture of tracheal aspirates. A score of ≥ 6 has been shown to correlate with the presence of VAP with high sensitivity although low specificity [1].

Treatment Protocol of Ventilator-Associated Pneumonia based on Microbial Susceptibility in Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, Isfahan, Iran

Background Choosing a unique empiric treatment for ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP) can be challenging. We aimed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the only referral pediatric hospital in Isfahan in order to design the optimal empiric treatment protocol. Materials and Methods: </strong...

Ventilator-associated pneumonia.

BACKGROUND Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is a type of nosocomial pneumonia that occurs in patients who receive mechanical ventilation (MV). According to the International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium (INICC), the overall rate of VAP is 13.6 per 1,000 ventilator days. The incidence varies according to the patient group and hospital setting. The incidence of VAP ranges from 13-...

Diagnosis and treatment of ventilator-associated pneumonia.

Ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) is the most common nosocomial infection in the ICU. Patients who acquire VAP have higher mortality rates and longer ICU and hospital stays. Because there are other potential causes of fever, leukocytosis, and pulmonary infiltrates, clinical diagnostic criteria are overly sensitive in the diagnosis of VAP. Employing quantitative cultures of bronchopulmonary ...

Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in the Intensive Care Unit: can the adequacy of empirical beta-lactam antibiotic therapy be improved?

Inadequate empirical antibiotic therapy for serious Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections has been linked to increased mortality. We performed a retrospective cohort study of consecutive patients with ventilator-associated pneumonia, bacteraemia or other sterile-site infections caused by P. aeruginosa occurring during Intensive Care Unit admissions. One hundred and fifty-eight episodes of serious i...

Determinants of prescription and choice of empirical therapy for hospital-acquired and ventilator-associated pneumonia.

The objectives of this study were to assess the determinants of empirical antibiotic choice, prescription patterns and outcomes in patients with hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP)/ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP) in Europe. We performed a prospective, observational cohort study in 27 intensive care units (ICUs) from nine European countries. 100 consecutive patients on mechanical ventilation...
